from materials provided by Sivananda and Jivamukti Yoga Centers

*Mantra = a sacred syllable, word, or set of words through the repetition and reflection of which one attains perfection, or realization of the Self.

*Chant = a song of raised Consciousness.  Chanting is devotional (bahkti) yoga, by which the yogi aligns with the Divine presence and releases his ego.  The vibrations are highly purifying.

I) Nirguna (Without Form) Mantras

Om  The primal sound of the Divine. The most powerful mantra.  It invokes pure supreme vibrations.  In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God (OM).

Soham  I Am That.  This mantra asserts the non-dualistic reality of the Self, as Pure Consciousness, Immortal and Eternal, as well as a connection with the entire Universe.
